Introduction to Community-Based Sustainable Business Projects

Monday - Session 1

Teachers will be able to identify the need for, and their role in developing community - based projects in Thai education

Mini-lecture defining community based sustainable business project.

Gapped pair-work reading based on Thai Ministry of Education's new curriculum directives

Pairs will decide, then report to large group on 3 ways in which the new curriculum has (or will) changed their teaching.

Teachers will explain the differences between traditional teaching and project facilitating

Gapped group-work reading activity highlighting different aspects of traditional teaching and project facilitating

Teachers will compare their finished worksheet with answers provided. They will then judge themselves as either traditional teachers or project facilitators.

Teachers will differentiate between definitions of sustainable development

Jigsaw reading and listening tasks with four views of sustainable development

Groups will draw pictures of environment, economy and sustainable development

 

Project Mukdaharn Case Study

Monday - Session 2

Teachers will select points they like and points they would change for community-based projects at their school

Video presentation of the 2000 Project Mukdaharn

Teachers decide then report to small groups on 3 things they liked and 3 things they would change at their school.

Teachers will debate the benefits of students learning English in community-based projects versus tradition classroom work.

English teachers from Mukdaharn High School will lead group discussions on 2000 Project Mukdaharn activities

Groups will reach a consensus on debate and defend their position to the large group.

 

Taxonomy of Critical Thinking Skills

Mini lecture outlining the hierarchy of Bloom's taxonomy of critical thinking skills and how they relate to Project Mukdaharn.

Groups will summarize the different thinking skill levels in Thai.

Teachers will be able to identify methods to determine difficulty of reading materials

Mini-lecture presentation on determining difficulty of reading materials.

Teachers will be able to match teaching techniques with materials of varying levels of reading difficulty.

Mini-lecture and demonstration using a variety of teaching techniques.

Using realistic Reading Materials From the Internet

Tuesday - Session 2

Teachers will distinguish between reliable and unreliable Internet sources

Reading stations with materials from three reliable and three unreliable Internet sites. Teachers read at all six stations and evaluate using criteria provided.

In groups teachers rank the six sites from most reliable to least reliable.

Teachers will determine level of Internet resource materials and match them with appropriate teaching strategies.

Using the guidelines given in Session 1, groups will analyse three sections from the reliable reading stations and determine how to present them to students.

Groups present ideas in large group session.

Teachers will diagram steps for using Internet reading.

In groups, teachers will create diagrams outlining the steps necessary to use Internet resources in class.

Diagrams posted on wall for others to discuss.

Teachers will know the many forms of written language.

Mini lecture introducing forms of writing used in school, social contact and business.

Teachers identify formats useful for their students and how they would teach their use.

Teachers will know formats for standard book reports integrating the writing process at various language levels.

Story reading and book report writing demonstration followed by a teacher created classroom-writing activity.

Presentation of the classroom-writing activities produced.

In a large group create a checklist of effective presentation skills.

Teachers will be able to design an evaluation criteria for presentations

In groups teachers will brainstorm, select, and compose criteria for presentation evaluation forms.

Groups hand in evaluation form incorporating the effective presentation skills.

Teachers will be able to judge the effectiveness of their own presentation skills.

Individually teachers will give a one-minute presentation, using a visual aid, while being video taped.

Using the group evaluation form above, teachers will self-evaluate their presentations from video.
