Project Mukdahan by Projects International / ERIC Mukdahan

Project Mukdahan is a community-based education initiative integrating Education for Sustainability (EfS) with English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This project takes advantage of several current aspects in education.

First, the Thai Ministry of Education promotes learning in the community, with non-traditional education partners, as part of the 10 approaches to student-centred learning (please see Managing Change Towards Student Centred Learning by Assoc. Prof. Richard Watson Todd, King Mongkut's University, et. al.)

Second, the international emphasis for education to promote more sustainable choices in our daily lives (ex. Agenda 21 and WSSD 2002).

Third, is the joining of environmental education with development education into the new field EfS. EfS recognizes that environmental sustainability is not achievable without first addressing inequalities in society (gender, ethnic, class) and our concepts of development (human / nature relation, globalisation, consumerism).

This year Project Mukdahan will include 25 students from three schools in Mukdahan Province (Mukdahan High School, Chulaporn High School and Nawamin High School). The project will link the students with Mukdahan Handcraft Centre. The students will design and market a locally made product for the global market place. The Handcraft Centre and local will help students with local knowledge / products.

Goal: empower students to use English to promote sustainable development in their community.

Project Outcomes: 1. Gain skills for working with the community. 2. Connect learning with the community. 3. Empower individual and cooperative actions for sustainability. 4. Link local situation with the national and global realities. 5. Link economic, environmental, and social systems. 6. Perceive, interpret, criticise and transform their world.

Session 3 (23/10 Wednesday 9:00 - 4:00): Mukdahan Handcraft Centre / Villages - Local community research - Activities 6, 7

Session 4 (24/10 Thursday 9:00 - 4:00): Mukdahan Handcraft Centre - Guest lectures / Product design - Activities 8, 9

Session 5 (25/10 Friday 9:00 - 4:00): Mukdahan Handcraft Centre - Product design / marketing - Activities 10, 11
