RONA
Kaupapa - Context
Maori oral traditions articulates that "Rona" is the woman on the moon. She became trapped there when she, one night swore at the moon, for disappearing behind a cloud. This waiata can be sung at powhiri but is more often sung by children.

Takoto ana au
I te moenga hurihuri
Tu ake au
Titiro ki te atarau
Kei runga ra
Te marama e whiti ana
Tera Rona
Kei roto ra
Piri ki te taha
Piri ki te ngaio
Aue ra...e
Rona e
Aue Rona e

I'm lying
In my  bed
And after a while get up
To look at the moonlight

It's up there
The bright moon
And there's Rona
In the middle

Holding the calabash,
Holding the ngaio tree

How sad for Rona!
Alas, all alone!
